THE CATENIAN ASSOCIATION - PROVINCE 1

Manchester North & Middleton

 Ged and Cathy Collins

Circle President for the current year is Ged Collins, pictured left with Cathy.

Our 700th meeting will be celebrated during his year of office with Grand President, John Mottram, in attendance to mark this major milestone of the Circle

An introduction to our circle
It was originally formed as North Manchester in 1954 with Joe Murphy as the founder President. The first meeting was held at the Grand Hotel in Manchester with 53 Brothers forming the new Circle, 26 of whom were transferring from other Circles and 27 were new Catenians.

In 1963 a separate Middleton Circle was formed with North Manchester contributing about 12 of its members.  Middleton continued as a separate Circle until July 1998 when it merged with North Manchester to become the present Circle.

Many Brothers of the Circle have gone on to hold office at Provincial level, with a number becoming Provincial President. The Circle is very active meeting monthly at St Bernadette’s Parish Centre, Whitefield. Council Meetings are held at the Lancashire Fold, Alkrington.

In the Association centenary year, we produced a CD written and recorded by our singing group known as The 168 Singers, who rehearse before each monthly meeting.
Stan Nowick had the idea for a Catenian greeting song and Damien Collins wrote the words to the song (set to the folk tune familiarly known as the “Wild Mountain Thyme”) with all the key words for Catenians – faith, family, friendship, links (Catena/chain), spirit, 100 years, 10,000 brothers woven into the text.
A
ll profits were donated to the Association’s Centenary Charity - Clean Water for Africa.

Besides our singing group, social events include Ladies Evenings, Clergy Nights on Shrove Tuesday, various quizzes and raffles and other events such as weekends away, theatre trips, meals and children’s pantomines.

Rainbow Trust

We are a Catholic social organisation and are not geared towards major charitable activities and fund raising. However, we raise funds as part of our social activities each year for a Charity nominated by our President.

Pictured left are Sue and Kevin White presenting a cheque to The Rainbow Family Trust, which runs the Francis House Children’s Hospice and is always in need of help. Click on the link and, if you can, please help!
